Choose Rwanda if you have three days or less and want the shortest possible trip - Volcanoes is a two-hour drive from Kigali airport. Choose Uganda if value matters or you want more than gorillas: the permit is $700 cheaper and you can add chimpanzees, savannah game drives and the Nile to the same trip.

The trek itself feels different
Bwindi is true rainforest - thick, tangled, humid, with visibility of a few metres until you are suddenly in a clearing with a family. It is harder walking and, for many people, the more cinematic experience.
Volcanoes is higher and more open, with bamboo zones and views back across the Virunga chain. Treks are often shorter, though altitude makes the climb feel real.

Our honest recommendation
For most first-time travelers we recommend Uganda, and we say that as a Ugandan operator, so weigh it accordingly. The reason is not patriotism but arithmetic: the money saved on permits usually upgrades your lodges or buys the chimpanzee trek, and gorilla trekking is more rewarding as part of a wider journey than as a standalone errand.
If your leave is genuinely three days, book Rwanda and do not overthink it. A short Rwanda trip beats a Uganda trip you cannot fit.

- Are the gorillas the same species?
- Yes - the same mountain gorilla population moves across the Virunga massif spanning Rwanda, Uganda and DRC. Bwindi holds a separate, distinct population of the same subspecies.
- Can I do both countries in one trip?
- You can, and we arrange it, but two permits means $2,300 in permits alone. Most travelers prefer to put that money into a longer Uganda itinerary.
- Which is safer?
- Both are safe and heavily ranger-protected. Neither country's gorilla sectors have safety concerns for tourists.
