Is Uganda safe for tourists?

Short answer
Yes, for ordinary safari travel Uganda is safe, and the safari circuit in the west and southwest has an excellent record. The realistic risks are road traffic, petty theft in Kampala, and malaria - not violent crime against tourists. A small number of border areas carry government advisories and we do not take travelers there.
What the real risks are
- Road safety - by far the biggest statistical risk. We use maintained 4x4s, experienced drivers, and we do not drive long distances after dark.
- Malaria - present nationwide. Prophylaxis, repellent and a treated net handle it.
- Petty theft - pickpocketing in Kampala markets and bus parks. Standard city precautions apply.
- Wildlife - real but managed. Follow your guide and ranger instructions and it is a non-issue.
Areas we avoid
Several governments advise against travel to parts of the far north-east Karamoja border, and to the immediate DRC border areas in the west. Our itineraries do not route through them. Where an advisory changes, we tell clients directly rather than waiting to be asked.

Things worth knowing before you come
- Uganda has laws criminalising same-sex relationships. LGBTQ+ travelers do visit and travel safely, but we recommend discretion and are happy to discuss this candidly and privately before you book.
- Photographing military installations, police and government buildings is prohibited.
- Yellow fever vaccination is a condition of entry.
- Ugandans are, genuinely and commonly remarked upon, among the most welcoming hosts in Africa.

- Is it safe for solo female travelers?
- Yes, and many travel with us. On a private guided itinerary you are accompanied throughout. In cities, the usual precautions apply as they would anywhere.
- Is tap water safe to drink?
- No - drink bottled or filtered water. We keep drinking water in the vehicle throughout your trip.
- What about Ebola or Marburg outbreaks?
- Uganda has occasional localised outbreaks that are contained by an experienced public health system, typically far from the safari circuit. We monitor Ministry of Health notices and will tell you if anything affects your route.
